COUNTY SANITATION DISTRICTS OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY: LANDFILL GAS RETROSPECTIVE AND CURRENT SYSTEMS

The County Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County (Sanitation Districts) have played a continuing key role in the development of effective and environmentally sound practices for the management of landfill gas, and for utilizing this gas as a valuable energy resource. Numerous advances in the field are the direct result of pioneering work performed not only by Sanitation Districts' staff, but also by consultants, joint venture partners, and others connected with the construction and operation of the Sanitation Districts' regional system of sanitary landfills. The Sanitation Districts' current system of operating and closed landfills and related facilities can be considered examples of the state-of-the-art with regard to landfill gas management and energy recovery and can be attributed to these earlier pioneering efforts. This recounting of the Sanitation Districts' past, present, and proposed future endeavors in this field are presented as a way of sharing experiences and lessons learned in achieving various landfill gas related milestones and accomplishments. The following provides a quick overview of some of these accomplishments in key areas. Each of these will be discussed in greater detail throughout this paper.
