The mechanics of the lap-shear test is complicated by geometrical effects and by large-scale plasticity. Cohesive-zone approaches that combine strength and energy considerations can describe the behavior of lap-shear joints very well. Such models can be used to analyze the effects of geometry, large-scale deformation in the adhesive and plasticity in the adherends. A cohesive-zone model was used to predict the behavior of lap-shear joints made from a commercial adhesive / aluminum adherend system for which the cohesive-zone parameters had been determined in earlier work. The resulting predictions showed excellent agreement with experimental observations.
