Interaction of High Pressure Plasmas with their Boundaries: Channels, Tubes, Liquids and Tissue

High pressure non-equilibrium plasmas are typically transients and often in the form of fast ionization waves (FIWs) which have applications in many areas from materials processing to plasma medicine. Although the properties of FIWs can be controlled at the time of initiation with the format of the pulse power, once launched their properties and their delivery of activation energy to surfaces is difficult to control. Some degree of control is possible through the manner that FIWs interact with their boundaries and with the boundaries they intersect. In this paper, results from a computational investigation will be discussed for how streamers and FIWs may be controlled through their interaction with boundaries. In particular, we will discuss the consequences of varying the secondary emission properties of bounding surfaces, the curvature of tubes through which FIWs propagation and the electrical properties below the surface of the materials FIWs intersect. Potential extensions of these techniques to treatment of human tissue in the context of plasma medicine will be discussed.
