摘要

This paper addresses the issue of the accuracy of finite element computations for flexible beams undergoing extreme states of three-dimensional finite displacements and rotations of cross-sections including the case of unequal principal bending stiffnesses. An important consideration is the ability to compute post lateral classical buckling configurations and to determine the rate of convergence for such solutions. These extreme states are most likely to occur when structures such as flexible pipelines are being installed or subjected to severe operational loading conditions and during emergency deployment situations. A number of classical benchmark solutions and a practical example using a flexible riser are presented to illustrate the need for accuracy.
