High power laser is being explored as a non-contact type dressing tool for alumina grinding wheel. The alumina grinding wheel sample surface underwent melting/vaporization on the surface when laser dressed, forming a modified layer on the surface. The individual particles formed on the surface have well-defined faceted structures. The particles formed have cutting edges on them. X-ray diffraction and pole figure analysis suggests that the formation of these faceted structures is due to preferential orientation of the grains after dressing.
