A plasma heated 40-50 kg/hour capacity shaft furnace was tested by SIA RADON on radioactive mixed waste, including 40-50 wt. % non-combustible components, under pyrolytic process conditions. The results of preliminary tests were utilized to design and construct the experimental 200÷250 kg/hour industrial-scale plant. The furnace utilized 0.5÷1.5 kW-hr/kg of electrical energy, depending upon specific waste composition, and resulted in pyrogas with average caloric values ranging from 5 to 7 MJ/kg. Combustion of the pyrogas in the afterburner provided the required afterburner temperature. The final waste product – a slag compound with high chemical durability was produced without utilizing any fluxing additives. The degree of 137 Cs escape from the furnace did not exceed 12 %; 60 Co did not exceed 2.5 % and trans-uranic elements – did not exceed 1 % due to the chosen shaft mode.
