CHARACTERISTICS OF CHLORINE IN MSW AND RDF – SPECIES, SAMPLING AND ANALYTICAL METHODS

The chlorine content of municipal solid waste (MSW) and refuse derived fuel (RDF) plays an important role for incineration processes. In order to prevent operational problems quality assured analytical methods for the determination of the chlorine concentration are necessary. In this paper several methods commonly used for analysis of chlorine are described and evaluated using samples of paper and cardboard, plastic waste and household kitchen waste. The suitability of each method will be discussed on the basis of feasibility, statistical evalua-tion, and accuracy. These data provide the possibility to identify the main chlorine sources and their species in household waste.
