To improve the effectiveness and to reduce the effort for spacecraft functional testing (especially for serial production or for tests which have to be repeated very often) a strategy has been developed which allows to define hardware oriented functional tests based on existing engineering data. The main advantages of this strategy are: 1.1 systematic approach for test definition which can be supported by computer tools 1.2 the resulting test is complete in the sense of covering all hardware functions and interfaces 1.3 The sequence of test steps is optimized avoiding duplications 1.4 The process is fast and reliable The paper starts with defining the requirements for the test strategy and with an evaluation of the available engineering data sources. It presents the process flow for test definition and describes the supporting computer tool. The strategy was applied to define the functional test on a running project and the experience gained is reported.
