Legacy military specification (MILSPEC) Navy “AN/UYK” family computers included many safety requirements desired by related system safety programs. With initiatives to incorporate Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) Single Board Computers (SBC) in weapon systems, safety features provided by MILSPEC computing devices may or may not be supported in either the SBC, cabinet hardware, support software or system architecture. As some desired safety features may not be found in the COTS environment, the safety engineer must identify any safety shortfalls and identify adequate mitigation. The checklist proposed in this paper provides guidance for this process.
