Mines Safety in India—Control of Accidents and Disasters in 21st Century

With enactment of Mines Safety Legislation in India in the beginning of last century, fatal accident rates had drastically reduced initially, but remained static thereafter. A few causes like fall of roof and wheeled trackless transportation system contributed a major share and they had a disturbingly similar trend. The traditional approach for control of accidents has reached its limit of effectiveness. Occurrence of mine disasters was at an alarmingly regular frequency. Fatalities in disasters due to inundation was staggeringly high in the fourth quarter of the last century. These call for a new broad based approach of Risk Assessment and Safety Management Plan with a judicious blend of existing systems for control of accidents and prevention of disasters.
