Actual Status and Future Development of Underground Coal Exploitation in Yugoslavia

Underground coal exploitation in the Republic of Serbia, based on significant coal reserves of A+B+C1 category, is estimated to exceed 290 million tons. The coal quality ranges from 15.000 to 31.000 (kJ/kg). Having in mind coal reserves and quality, the spatial position, the experience acquired as well as the traditional underground mining, a more intense coal production in Serbia would certainly solve the problems of long-lasting and safe supply of consumers and partial substitution of liquid and gas energy sources from imports. The Republic of Serbia annually imported about 2 million tons of quality coal for the requirements of industry and wide consumption, thus economically justifying even more the investment in underground coal mining development through modernization of total exploitation technology for increasing production, productivity, work safety and improving work conditions.
