Artifacts and Test Procedures for Contour Measuring Instruments

Contour measuring instruments are applied in mechanical engineering and optics industry. They are running both, in the workshop and in air-conditioned measurement rooms. This is reflected in a variety of test objects and measurement tasks. Amongst these are outer and inner contours, where radii, angles and sizes have to be determined. Typical tolerances of 0.05 mm and less are a challenge for the instruments. The ability of the instruments for such tasks has to be checked by acceptance tests and in the framework of quality management by periodic interim checks and reverification tests. Prerequisites are suitable embodied standards, unified parameters, and test procedures. For contour measuring instruments these prerequisites are not fulfilled as yet. Therefore, three major manufacturers of contour measuring instruments and the PTB have run a joint project to fill these gaps. Suitable artifacts and a test procedure were developed and investigated. One artifact was developed to be used as a working standard for testing contour measuring instruments and to be calibrated by a calibration laboratory. Moreover, another more precise artifact was developed within the project to be used as a transfer standard closing the traceability chain from the calibration laboratory to the NMI (e.g. PTB).
