A holder (22) for the workpiece (10) aligns a surface contour in a measuring position. The length probe (24) has two opposing arms (46, 48) on opposite sides. One arm carries the surface contour sensing element (50) while the other carries a measuring result pick-up (52). The arms are held in a vertical orientation such that the sensing element and pick-up are movable in planes with orthogonal axes. At least one measuring unit (26) has a removable measuring sensor (58) responding to the pick-up. An electrical device (60), e.g. a coil, responds to the deflection of the sensor to produce a corresp. analogue signal. USE/ADVANTAGE - Surface contour of circumferential groove of pilgrim step roller during mfr. Minimises human factors, such as a ability and care, during testing procedure.
