Seals in rotating or reciprocating equipment can suffer from premature wear in abrasive and corrosive environments. The newly-developed Hardide nano-structured Tungsten Carbide coatings help prolong seal life and increase equipment maximum operating temperatures. The coating protects metal plungers and shafts from abrasion and corrosion, and thus prevents the roughening of the metal surface which can accelerate the elastomeric seal wear rate by an order of magnitude. These coatings enable the design of high temperature metal/metal seals which expand and contract together with steel shafts, maintaining constant clearance. The CVD coatings can coat uniformly complex shapes, both internal and external surfaces.
