The paper presents the innovative design of a mechanical seal installed on a Kaplan turbine for hydro power in south-west of France. The need for an alternative solution had come from end-user dissatisfaction in using braided packings. The mechanical seal type approach was in the context a logical route to consider. As the turbine situation did not allow any sliding of complete components around the main shaft, a split design was necessary. A standard loading device, such as a series of helical springs around the circumference, being inappropriate, the key element of the system ended up being an inflatable rubber profile positioned at the back of the stationary face.
