1. The heterogeneous catalyst system consisting of WCl_6, immobilised on silica gel, in combination with 1,1,3,3-tetramethyl-l,3-disilacyclobutane shows good activity and high selectivity for the metathesis of 1-octene. 2. The system is environmentally benign, because it does not require a solvent. Moreover, it does not contain toxic components, while the catalyst can also be reused.
