The ballistic impact performance of several high performance fibers is investigated for application asballistic protective helmet materials. Materials considered include Zylon? fiber with Kraton?, vinylesterand thermoplastic polyester resins, a hybrid system comprised of carbon fiber with an epoxy resin (as thestrikeface material) and Zylon? with a thermoplastic polyester resin (as the backface material), Spectra?2000 fiber with a vinylester resin, and Spectra? 2000 consolidated without resin. Comparison of theperformance of each material system is made to both the performance of 850 denier Kevlar? KM2 fiberwith a polyvinylbutyral/phenolic resin and to the expected performance of optimized Zylon? armorsystems.
