Usefulness of Oral Bepridil for Paroxysmal and Persistent Atrial Fibrillation Refractory to Class I Drugs

We retrospectively studied the efficacy and safety of oral bepridil (Bpd) for atrial fibrillation (AF) refractory to class I anti-arrhythmic drugs. Bpd was administrated in 176 patients (83 male, average age of 58 years) with paroxysmal (82 pts) or persistent AF (94 pts). hi 71 of 82 patients (87%) with paroxysmal AF, Bpd effectively prevented attacks for an average of 12.3 months. In 51 of 94 patients (51%) with persistent AF, sinus rhythm was restored within 2.4 months following administration of Bpd, and 44 of those 51 patients (86%) have been maintained in sinus rhythm for an average follow-up of 9,7 months, no serious adverse complications including torsade de pointes were recognized and the change of the average QTc interval was not significant. Bpd is clinically safe and useful for AF refractory to class'!anti-arrhythmic drugs.
