Perforator with electromagnetic drive (EMP) was developed in the Mining Institute after D.A.Kunaev and has no analogues with regards to its characteristics. EMP is designed for the drilling of boreholes and wells 40-85 mm in diameter in the rocks with the rigidity of 10-20 on the Protodyakonov's scale. EMP with the power of a unit blow of 150 J and efficiency output of 0.25-0.35 was developed to replace the pneumatic and hydraulic perforators of the analogous class (for instance, PK-75) having a number of significant disadvantages: multiple transformation of energy of one kind into another; harmful emissions into work space and high level of noise at the operation of pneumatic perforators (total efficiency output of which is only 0.02 - 0.06).
