The application of the mining method underhand cut-and-fill (UHCF) is discussed. The views are focused on the backfill material, the components in use. The main features of UHCF are presented, leading to the processes capable to introduce UHCF, respectively the processes for backfill handling. Geomechanical considerations of UHCF give references for design strength and stress deformation behaviour, comparing various backfill types. The application of UHCF is show on the example of Rodoretto mine in Italy, where a steep dipping talc deposit is mined with the help of cemented rockfill.
