Sacral Deafferentation and Neurostimulation of the Anterior Spinal Roots in the Treatment of Neuropathic Urinary Bladder in Patients with Complete Transverse Spinal Lesions - A Running clinical study

Sacral deafferentation and electrostimulation of the urinary bladder is one of the most effective therapeutic methods of neuropathic urinary bladder caused by suprasacral transverse spinal lesions. Rhizotomy permanently increases the compliance of the bladder, eliminates hyperreflexia of the detrusor-sphincteric dyssenergy - the main cause of neuropathy and urinary incontinence. Implantation of stimulator of the anterior spinal roots enables the patient to control micturition, possibly also defaecation and erection. From January 2001 to May 2003 we operated on 8 patients with complete suprasacral spinal lesions caused by injuries of the spine. In 7 patients complete continence was restored, and in all 8 patients hyperreflexia of the detrusor disappeared completely. Six patients used from the very beginning a neurostimulator for defaecation and two for assisted defaecation.
