The Sackville reinforced test embankment was analysed using the finite element method (FEM) adopting two different models for the foundation soil and the results are compared with the field performance. A fully coupled large deformation Biot consolidation formulation was adopted in both analyses but with (ⅰ) an elasto-viscoplastic (creep) and (ⅱ) the modified Cam-clay (MCC) material models for the foundation soil. Comparison of analyses results with the field observation revealed that the MCC model captured many features of the embankment behaviour simultaneously to reasonable accuracy. However, the creep model gives better prediction compared to that of the MCC model. The possible reasons for this slightly better prediction of the creep model and the discrepancies of both model predictions with the field measurements are also discussed.
