The paper presents the result of research studies undertaken to provide a better understanding of the bearing capacity of a layer of sand with or without a layer of geosynthetic over hydraulically placed super soft clay. The research includes element tests of clay, geosynthetic and sand and also analytical study of the subject. The findings of the study identify the controlling parameters and show that a number of parameters, associated with the physical properties of the material used, can be critical to the success of the technique. A discussion is also presented on the importance of bending stiffness of geosynthetics.
