Uncertainties are unavoidable at all stages of a given project, and the existence of uncertainties is unavoidable in geotechni-cal engineering primarily because it deals with complex, variable, natural media of soil and rock masses. Probabilistic concepts provide a useful tool to incorporate uncertainty formally in the design process. Probabilistic analysis can be preformed with the same amount of data that are required for the deterministic analysis, and also using some simple analytical models. This paper presents an evaluation based on probabilistic approaches, of the effectiveness of drainage in the stabilization of two natural slopes in Sri Lanka at Watawala and Marangahawela.
