Introduction and Some Observations on 2002 Chinese Wind Load Code

With the significant scientific advances in structural deisgn and technology and rapid developement for new civil infrastructures in China, there is in practical need of technical change of Chinese Wind Load Code GBJ9-87 which had been used since 1987. To this end, the new Chinese Wind Load Code, GB50009-2001, was recently approved for the use in 2002. This paper introduces the updated information in the Code and provides some observations on a methodology used. It is emphasized that in Chinese Load Code, the constant gust response factor along the height is not adopted. It is noted that the technique of constant gust response factor along the height is unreasonable. For illustration, detail analysis has been given and some examples are presented to show the error of structural responses obtained by constant gust response factor technique.
