A Novel Approach to Teaching an Understanding of Programming

In most Intelligent Tutoring Systems for teaching programming, the student is required to produce a computer program, often from a verbal or diagrammatic specification. In contrast, our scheme involves supplying the student with a working program from which they have to produce a diagram. Here we justify our approach, describe a prototype system and discuss possible extensions.
