Sensors for the in-situ measurement of hydrocarbons (HC) in exhausts need to be sensitive for HC- concentrations in the ppm range to monitor i.e. the quality of catalysts and the effectiveness of combustions [1]. Mixed potential solid electrolyte sensors are suited for that purpose with respect to their potential for miniaturisation and low cost solutions. To meet the requirements of automotive applications it is necessary to improve the sensitivity at low HC concentrations and to prolong the stability at temperatures between (500...800)°C. The aim of this work was therefore the development and investigation of electrode materials with tailored catalytic activities and the optimisation of preparation with respect to the surface morphology and shape because these parameters are sensitive for the electrode behaviour in different combustibles.
