It could be shown that high-performance IR cameras with NETD values below 0.1 K require a signal processing unit with at least 16-bit resolution to get sufficient measuring ranges for industrial-processing applications. The calculated relationship between dynamic and measuring range was evaluated experimentally for two prototypes of a commercial high-performance IR camera equipped with either a microbolometer or a pyroelectric focal plane array. The presented IR camera system is suited for the most diverse applications in the field of non-contact temperature measurement. Its design garantees, that its behavior will be kept constant regardless which kind of sensor and which wavelength range have been chosen.
