High-Dynamic-Range Imaging Technology with 8K Super Hi-Vision Cameras

The newest broadcasting standard for 8K Super Hi-Vision (8K) specifies a high-dynamic-range (HDR) technology that expands the range of brightness (the dynamic range) on brighter displays. NHK STRL is conducting research and development on an HDR method named "Hybrid Log-Gamma" (HLG) that has been developed in collaboration with the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation). The HDR video can express higher contrast and sparkle (see Photographs) than the conventional standard-dynamic-range (SDR) video. In this research, we have developed HLG signal processing circuits in order to shoot 8K HDR video using existing 8K cameras.
