Multiple alien chromosome segments; originating from different recombinant lines; were simultaneously incorporated into durum wheat. The chromosomally engineered 4x recombinants used as parents were homozygous for a Th. ponticum (Lr]9+Yp genes); anAe. longissima (PmJS); 2i IDS (Gli-Dl/Ghi-D3) or IDL (Glu-Dld) common wheat transfer; respectively. Homoeologous recombination products involved the 7AL-7AgL; 3BS-3S'S; lAS-lDS and lAL-lDL wheat-alien arms; with the alien segments spanning 16-23% ofthe recombinant arms. From heterozygous combinations of different recombinants; selfed/BC progeny were obtained and genotyped; mostly employing STS and SSR markers to discriminate donor and recipient alleles. Gametes homozygous for two different wheat-alien chromosomes exhibited normal transmission through both germlines. This applied also to a triple recombinant progeny where; in a 7AS.7AL-7AgL homozygous background; segregation of the 3BL.3BS-3S^S and 1 AL. 1AS-IDS chromosomes showed no deviation with respect to normal. No significant differences were apparently associated with dosage of the wheat-alien chromosomes also in terms of plant vigour and fertility. The overall results indicate a good degree of tolerance of the tetraploid genome toward the type of manipulations performed; which can represent an effective strategy to simultaneously enrich durum wheat genotypes with multiple usefiil attributes from related Triticeae species.
