Wheat maps on GrainGenes: Past, present and coming attractions

The GrainGenes project is a USDA-supported compilation of molecular and phenotypic information on wheat, barley, rye and oats. A popular feature of the GrainGenes project since its inception is the curation and web-based delivery of interactive genetic and physical maps. Currently GrainGenes serves over 100 map sets and linkage data, of which, 69 are of Triticum aestivum, Triticum turgidum and diploid wheat species. GrainGenes is planning a major move from an object-oriented database to a relationaldatabase. In doing so, the GrainGenes curators are completely revising the user interface to provide a more intuitive approach to searching. New map viewing graphical interfaces will also be implemented. The Genome Browser, developed by the GMOD group, will provide a user-friendly interface for physical maps, and allow users to annotate map data and curators to include more features than currently available on the ACEDB map viewer. The cMAP viewer, developed by Gramene, will facilitate comparative genomics on GrainGenes by allowing users to align and compare all maps in GrainGenes. An overview of current map accessions, planned additions and new features will be discussed.
