A total of 33 leaf rust susceptible lines isolated from the Argentinean wheat cultivar Sinvalocho MA, which carries the Lr3 gene for leaf rust resistance on distal chromosome 6BL, were used for physical mapping of AFLP markers. C-banding analysis revealed the existence of deletions on chromosome 6BL: One line is nulli-6B, two lines are ditelo 6BS, two, three and ten lines have long terminal deletions of 42%, 30% and 20%, respectively, three lines show very short terminal deletion, one line has an intercalary deletion of 11% and eleven lines have no cytological evidence of deletion. The AFLP analysis confirmed and even refined this grouping. Thirty two markers were located on the 6BL arm. Fourteen mapped to the short terminal deletion, eight to the terminal 20% of the arm, five to the adjacent 20% and five to the rest. On the other hand, three terminal markers were polymorphic between Sinvalocho and the rust susceptible cultivar Gamma 6. The F7 from this cross will be used to genetically map this markers and the Lr3 locus.
