Ten protein phosphatase 2C (PP2C) genes were isolated from wheat mature embryos and designated as TaP2C#l- #10. A phylogenetic analysis implicated that TaP2C#2 and TaP2C#6 had a more close relation to ABI1 and ABI2 genes than others, and that TaP2C#9had a close relation to kinase-associated protein phosphatase (KAPP). Abscisic acid (ABA) sensitivity in wheat embryos is one of important factors to determine the level of wheat seed dormancy (Walker-Simmons, 1987). Since several ABA insensitive (ABI) genes were identified in Arabidopsis (Finkelstein et al., 2002), it is intriguing to study wheat genes corresponding to those ABI genes in relation to wheat seed dormancy. We previously found the difference in the level of expression of a wheat ABI3 homologue between dormant and non-dormant cultivars (Nakamura and Toyama, 2001). In upstream pathway of ABB gene, ABI1 and ABI2 genes work as negative regulators (Meyer et al., 2001) and both of them have protein phosphatase 2C domain. Here we are reporting our results from a phylogenetic analysis of 10 PP2C genes isolated from wheat mature embryos.
