Numerical results for built-in mild steel circular plates of different thicknesses (radius-thickness ratio of 14, 19 and 31) subjected to a localised blast load of varying load diameters are presented. The Finite Element package ABAQ US/Explicit is used to construct a model using continuum axi-symmetric elements that allow detailed observations of material behaviour throughout the plate thickness. Non-linear geometry and material effects that include strain rate sensitivity and temperature effects are also included. The blast is modelled assuming an exponential decay over the plate. The model predicts failure as a result of localised high temperature bands. The predictions show an encouraging correlation with experimental data for both the displacement profile and tearing at the centre of the plate.
