A drop hammer experimental set-up is used to obtain the response of beams struck transversely by a mass at its centre in this paper. The present experimental results compare well with the theoretical elasto-plastic predictions. Thirty-one beam specimens with various cross sections and with two different boundary conditions were tested. Beams with one end fixed and the other end supported on roller without any rotation are used to determine the actual role of membrane force in the deformation process of clamped beams. The experimental results indicate that the membrane force plays a significant role in the deformation process of clamped beams.
