Existing classical analytical tools suffice for a majority of simple structures. However, many important practical phenomena have been observed in thin-walled composite, as well as isotropic, beams to which the linear classical tools are blind. Linearity precludes a cross-sectional analysis, for example, from capturing the trapeze effect, from accurate modeling of a thin anisotropic strip with small pretwist, from effective mathematical modeling of damage in thin-walled composite structures, from analyzing tapered composite laminates etc. Hence, there is a need for large deformation non-classical non-linear theory. This need transforms into a fundamental need for model-based damage diagnostics of thin, tapered and pretwisted anisotropic beams.
