The paper presents observations from nonlinear finite element analysis of adhesively bonded lap joints considering elasto-viscoplastic constitutive model of the adhesive material based on a pressure sensitive (modified) von Mises yield function. The stress-strain of the adhesive is represented by the Ramberg-Osgood relation. Geometric nonlinearity due to finite rotation in the joint is also accounted for using finite strain description. The adherends and adhesive layers are modelled using 20 noded solid elements. The effect of viscoplasticity on the distribution of stresses is discussed for single and double lap joints identifying three-dimensional dominant zones in the lapped region, thus suggesting need for three-dimensional consideration in the study of failure mechanism of such joints.
