A novel algorithm based on stochastic context free grammar (SCFG) for promoter prediction in genomic sequences is developed in this work. The promoter region in a genomic sequence is used to initiate and regulate transcription of a gene and is a crucial step in gene expression. Identification and elucidation of the promoter is crucial to the principles of gene regulation and lead to understanding of the functional role of the gene. The algorithm predicts proximal promoter, distal promoter and core promoter. Finally, the structure prediction of promoter in a genomic sequence would locate the transcription binding sites.
