El Tih kaolinite concentrate, Sinai, Egypt, calcined at temperatures ranging between 500°C and 886°C for contact times 2-6 hrs was evaluated by IR and SEM with EDS. The metakaolinite produced during de-hydroxylation of kaolinite was leached with sulfuric acid for 1hr. The structural and textural changes of kaolinite were studied. The mechanisms responsible for the observed changes in these properties are discussed in this paper. Potential applications of the modified material are determined.
