The fluid behaviour inside surface modified glass microchannels is presented. Cylindrical microchannels with diameters of 57 μm have been coated using self-assembled monolayers in order to change the surface hydrophobicity and surface charge. Laser scanning confocal microscopy is used to determine the velocities of individual 450nm fluorescent particles in water. Higher velocities near the surface were observed in hydrophobic channels when compared with hydrophilic channels, which suggests the existence of a slip velocity. CFD (computational fluid dynamics) simulations with modified slip boundary conditions are also presented, though these results do not agree with the experimental results.
