Quality of antibiotic prescribing for prophylaxis in Neurosurgery: Results from 8 Neurosurgery Departments in 6 European Countries

The aim of this study was to check the quality of antibiotic prescribing for pe-rioperative chemoprophylaxis in Neurosurgery and to trace out changes that must be made to improve its quality. 8 Neurosurgery Departments from 6 European countries participated in the study. The conformance to the guidelines and the quality of antibiotic prescribing for perioperative prophylaxis were checked by use of the same detailed questionnaire in each country. The quality of antibiotic prescribing for perioperative prophylaxis was not satisfactory. The duration of prophylaxis exceeded 24 hours in all countries except Denmark and Italy. The quality of antibiotic prescribing for prophylaxis was generally good in Denmark but it was not satisfactory in the other countries. The most common errors were prolongation of prophylaxis and the use of 3rd generation cephalosporins - and even 4th generation in Croatia. Aminoglycosides were used in Denmark, Italy, Serbia and Montenegro. Vancomycin was used in Italy.
