Wind as a reliable source for electricity generation: the trinidad tobago perspective

Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) has a 50-year reserve of natural gas. As can be expected, this natural resource accounts for use of gas turbines for electricity generation. However, with its alignment to NE trade winds and the concomitant environmental concerns, wind energy production in becoming a viable option. The paper explores the techniques and procedures to harness this renewable resource. A mathematical model, as a wind resource tool, has been defined. An optimised method for proper matching of machine type to site conditions has been developed. This is then fed into a reliability model so as to obtain penetration levels. Finally, the dynamic effect of the system on the local grid is explored.
