Characterization of granular cohesion and tensile strength in slow frictional flows can be done by Mohr-Coulomb analysis of shear-cell data. However, it is often difficult to make useful comparisons among weakly cohesive granules using the conventional analysis because the analytical results are based on extrapolation of fitted data. This is because variance in curve fitting can overshadow the differences in the cohesive and tensile intercepts. This paper presents a scaling approach that supplies additional curve-fitting constraints. Analysis using these additional constraints can help elucidate subtle differences in tensile properties, including intrinsic and consolidation-dependent tensile strength.
