The Manhood Peninsula Partnership - Coastal Zone Management in Practice

The authors' intention in producing this paper was to "flesh out" the concept of coastal zone planning in a discrete area, especially where the communities are directly involved in the consultation process. The authors suggest that considerably more needs to be done in educating the public, and also to ensure decision taking is both transparent and, as far as possible, fair. To this end the financing of schemes and compensation for those affected needs to be re-visited. Finally, whilst the remit of the partnership is to look at scenaria up to thirty years on, clearly proposals must incorporate flexibility in case there is evidence that current views on climate change become invalid. There is a vision, worth pursuing: there are deliverables in the medium term: involving the community has proved exciting, frustrating, and ultimately satisfying: an integrated approach to planning, engineering and the environment is clearly the best option: and the authors hope their account will be an example to others.
