Surviving the End of Your Web Project

The majority of recent projects aim to create a resource or product that will continue beyond the life of the project. However, funding for projects remains within a definite period of time, with no provision for the success of the product once the funding stream has ended. This leaves the majority of project managers being increasingly worried about 'the exit strategy' as the end of the project approaches. The aim of this paper is not to discuss an exit strategy, which should be particular to each individual project, but to provide some ideas and guidance for how to create an internet based resource that will continue to be useful, and up-to-date, after the end of the project. It is mainly aimed at projects which collect information from users outside the project team which will need to be updated periodically. The main problems that result in the decline of the resource are: no funding; no staff; no technical support. The effects of these can be minimised by looking at four different issues.
