We studied a group of elderly individuals with a lifelong history of endurance training by using pulsed tissue Doppler imaging, a new method recently developed. Respect to their sedentary peers, elderly athletes showed a preserved left ventricular diastolic function, thus demonstrating that chronic physical training can prevent the age-related decline in left ventricular diastolic function.
