Bone marrow (BM) progenitor cells were shown recently to take part in vascular reparation. Those cells can also be used in transplantation and gene therapy, therefore modifying their behaviour is of great interest. In this study, we made an attempt to perform an ex vivo labeling of BM progenitor Linc-Kit~+(LK)-cells and Linc-Kit~+Sca-1~+(LKS)-cells with a gene of red fluorescent protein (dsRed) using a HIV-based gene construct. Another aim was to follow the fate of those male cells, transplanted into lethally irradiated females. They were shown to form spleen colonies and to be able to restore hematopoiesis in chimeric mice. 68% of 10-day spleen colonies expressed dsRed. BM and blood cells of chimeras reconstituted with LK-cells expressed dsRed for 4 months and those reconstituted with the LKS-cells - even after 12 months.
