The Effects of an Exercise Intervention on Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Postmenopausal Type 2 Diabetics

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of a supervised exercise intervention on cardiovascular disease risk in postmenopausal type 2 diabetics. We report data from the first four enrolled subjects (57.8 +- 9.2 yr, 66.4 +- 5.9 kg, 76.0 +- 50.9 months post-diabetes diagnosis) who recently completed pre- and post-training maximal exercise testing, laboratory assessments, and body composition evaluation. The aerobic training program consisted of 12 weeks of supervised aerobic exercise (treadmill, bike) for 30 minutes three times per week (36 sessions total). Recovery diastolic blood pressure (3 min post-max) was lower post-training (p <.05). A trend was observed for decreases in total cholesterol (p = .079), percentage of body fat (p = .075), and recovery systolic blood pressure (p = .067) post-training. C-reactive protein was significantly associated with HbA_(1c) (r = 0.95, p< .05), and insulin resistance (r = 0.99, p < .05). Our preliminary data suggest that a 30 minute, aerobic training program can lower blood pressure, total cholesterol, body fat, and fasting glucose.
