The effects of rosuvastatin and atorvastatin on plasma lipids and cytokines were compared in hypercholesterolemic patients with type 2 diabetes. Sixty-two hypercho-lesterolemic patients who were receiving 10 mg daily of pravastatin were randomly replaced with one of two groups: rosuvastatin (2.5 mg daily, n = 32), or atorvastatin (10 mg daily, n = 30). After 3 months of replacement, significant reductions were found in plasma low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), small dense LDL-C, (sLDL-C) and LDL-C/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratios, plasma monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in both groups. Plasma intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) was increased in both groups, while a significant increase in the plasma vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) was found only in the atorvastatin group.
