Mesoporous smectite-type materials containing cobalt cations in octahedral sheets (MST(Co)) were prepared with a hydrothermal method and their hydrodesulfurization (HDS) activities were tested. The MST(Co) catalyst synthesized at 473 K showed a higher HDS activity than that of a commercial catalyst.
